Energy efficient

Household energy can be one of the bigger expenses in your life if you’re not careful. Fortunately, it’s possible to reduce the amount of money you sink into electrical use by making a few simple changes in your home.

If possible, build your home green from the very beginning. If that isn’t possible, you can still go ahead and boost your savings through creative solutions. Here’s how:

Turn Off Anything You’re Not Using

If you have appliances or electronics that you’re not actually using, try unplugging them to reduce power usage. It’s easy to leave the computer on, because you’ll probably use it later, but that energy use adds up. You should always turn off everything that isn’t currently in use and you’ll see the difference on your energy payments.

Reduce Light Usage

Never leave the lights on in a room that you’re not using. This is a waste of electricity that can be avoided quite easily. Installing windows can also help increase the amount of natural light that enters your home, making electric lights unnecessary during the day.

Invest in Energy Efficient Appliances

Everything from your refrigerator and stove to your washer and dryer should be energy efficient. Older models may be cheaper to purchase, but they will cost you in the long run, in energy use. When it’s time to replace your existing appliances, look for those that will save you quite a bit of money.

Install Double Glazed Windows

Windows and doors can be a point of contention when it comes to saving on energy. Double glazed windows let you enjoy plenty of natural light (saving on electricity), but don’t allow heat and cold to pass through as easily as regular single pane glass.

Add Insulation

Dealing with high bills because your heating or cooling is through the roof? It’s literally going through the roof . . . one of the most vulnerable spaces in the home. Using an extra layer of insulation will help protect your entire home from heat or cold and you’ll be able to lower those heating and cooling costs.

Install Solar Power

Solar panels can be installed to produce power just from the sunlight that hits them, eliminating the need to constantly use the grid for energy. This can save quite a bit of money over time.

Replace Door Panes with Double Glazed

Does your door have a window in it? Then it should be replaced with double glazed panes. Even elegant stained glass can be done in double glaze so you don’t have to worry about the heat transference that is an issue with regular glass.
